What Are Shin Splints?
Shin splints refer to pain along the inner edge of the shinbone (tibia). They sit on the lower end of a spectrum of bone stress injury, which at its more severe end includes stress fractures.

What Is a Stress Fracture?
A stress fracture is a small crack in the bone caused by repeated mechanical loading — essentially, the bone is breaking down faster than it can repair itself. In runners, the tibia is the most common site. Stress fractures are a more serious injury than shin splints and carry a risk of complete fracture if not properly managed.
Symptoms of a Stress Fracture
- Pinpoint tenderness at a very specific spot on the shin — you can often put one finger on it
- Pain that gets worse as your run continues — it does not ease with warm-up
- Pain that may eventually force you to stop running altogether
- Aching at rest or overnight in more severe cases
- Swelling or puffiness over the sore area
What Causes Stress Fractures?
- Sudden spikes in training load — classic in runners building towards a race

What to Do for Shin Splints
The good news: shin splints respond well to the right management, and most runners don’t need to stop entirely.
- Reduce your training load. Dial back volume and intensity. Avoid hills and hard surfaces in the short term.
- Cross-train. Cycling, swimming, or pool running maintains fitness while reducing tibial load.
- Strengthen your calves, feet, and hips. Calf raises, toe raises, and single-leg work build the tissue resilience you need.
- Check your footwear. If your shoes have more than 500–700 km on them, they may not be providing adequate cushioning.
- Gradually return to running. Build back slowly — no more than a 10% weekly increase in volume as a guide.

- Stop running. Continuing to run through a stress fracture risks a complete fracture — this is not an injury to push through.
- See a health professional. Imaging (MRI or bone scan — X-rays often miss stress fractures early on) may be required to confirm the diagnosis and grade its severity.
- Relative rest for 6–10 weeks is typically needed, depending on location and severity.
- Address contributing factors — bone health, nutrition, load management, and biomechanics — before returning to running.
- Return to running is progressive and should be guided by a physiotherapist.
